What is the Crypto Conference?
With the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the world’s crypto conferences have been canceled or moved remotely. These cancellations are unfortunate as crypto conferences are among the most exciting aspects of the crypto world, but they will soon be back in full force.
Crypto and blockchain conferences are a pillar of the crypto community by providing valuable educational opportunities and networking experiences.
The wealth of information available at a crypto conference can have an incredible impact on both your career and life. These conferences can help you stay on top of the crypto and better understand the crypto ecosystem’s events.
By attending these conferences, you often get a sneak peek at what is coming in the blockchain world. This cutting-edge information is leverageable into new opportunities as an entrepreneur or investor.
Conferences are often put on and sponsored by private groups, academic institutions, consortiums, blockchain projects, platforms, developers, and other organizations. As a result, there are tons of different conferences and events to choose from each year. Some conferences are more valuable than others, but they all have their own focuses.
Specific conferences concentrate on crypto investors and enthusiasts, others on blockchain industry participants, developers, disruptors, and any combination of the above.
Before choosing which crypto conference to attend, it is vital to review your specific goals for attending these events and compare them to the conference’s content. This includes the conference’s agenda, the complexity of the content offered, meeting format, the quality and type of speakers, and networking opportunities provided.
Top 3 Crypto Conferences of 2020
1) Consensus
“Consensus is the most popular crypto conference in the world. What happens there moves the crypto market.” – Ian Balina, Founder and CEO of Token Metrics
Arriving in a dominating 1st place with over 75% of the total vote is the crypto conference Consensus. This result comes as no surprise as this annual conference is hosted by one of the most popular media organizations in crypto, CoinDesk.
CoinDesk has played a significant role in the crypto space and earned a feature in the top position of our previous Moon Awards category Best Crypto News Sites of 2020.
Since 2015, Consensus has quickly become a “must attend” event for crypto enthusiasts. Initially starting with just 500 attendees and 12 sponsors, Consensus grew to over 4,700 attendees and 175 sponsors in 2019.
Hosted in New York City each May, Consensus strives to give attendees the inside track on what is going in crypto along with a valuable insight into where blockchain technology is heading. Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Consensus had to adapt drastically to ensure a safe conference experience.
This past May, Consensus adjusted and went entirely virtual with Consensus: Distributed. This adaptation allowed the crypto community across the world to attend Consensus for free. As a result, over 10,000 people around the globe participated in the conference.
CoinDesk putting together quite a star-studded lineup for Consensus: Distributed also helped set this record attendance. The conference featured Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, economist Carlota Perez, Consensys CEO Joseph Lubin, and Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao.
Consensus: Distributed also had a heavy entertainment dose by featuring pop culture icons Michelle Phan, Akon, Spencer Dinwiddie, and The Chainsmokers.
2) Satoshi Roundtable
“Satoshi roundtable is by far the most exclusive conference due to the 225 invite-only slots and the attendee’s caliber. Each year, industry leaders such as Vitalik Buterin, Charlie Lee, Brian Armstrong, and others meet up and strategize on ways to continue pushing industry growth”. – Diego Lara, Token Metrics Advisor
Arriving in 2nd place is the crypto conference that is very different from the others on this list, Satoshi Roundtable. This past February was the sixth time the Satoshi Roundtable occurred, and it was one of the few crypto events of the year that was in-person.
This year’s Satoshi Roundtable took place between February 7th-10th in North America. Now, why is the location of the conference listed nothing more than a continent? Well, that question leads into the unique aspect of the Satoshi Roundtable.
The Satoshi Roundtable is held in a secret location each year as it is a private event. This conference’s invite list is very exclusive as only 225 crypto industry leaders receive invites each year. As a result, the Satoshi Roundtable was one of the few in-person crypto conferences this year.
The Satoshi Roundtable serves as a venue that brings together leading developers, CEOs, founders, scientists, academics, and investors. The conference is formatted to be a unique, interactive, and decentralized discussion structure designed to maximize the amount of learning, meetings, and work done through formal and informal sessions.
What makes the Satoshi Roundtable so attractive to crypto industry leaders, other than opportunities presented at the event, is the benefits that come with the conference.
Conference attendees get treated with an all-inclusive resort setting featuring meals, activities, and in-depth discussions. The Satoshi Roundtable is also free from any press, media, or pitches, with all meetings held off the record. These facets allow the conference to be set by the participants and to be genuinely free-flowing.
3) Token 2049
“Token 2049 is the premier crypto conference in Asia. While this conference has not attracted big players as Consensus would, the attendees and speakers have constantly grown and improved. With cryptocurrency having a strong presence in Asia, Token 2049 is poised to be one of the leading crypto events in the world.” – Ugo Nduaguba, Token Metrics Advisor
Coming in a distant 3rd place is the crypto conference, Token 2049. First hosted in 2018, Token 2049 is held every March in Hong Kong. Since 2019, Token 2049 serves as the flagship event of Asia Crypto Week.
Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was canceled in 2020 but scheduled to resume on March 23rd and 24th of 2021.
Token 2049 labels itself as the “premier crypto event in Asia” as it serves as a place for founders and C-level executives of leading crypto companies to share their views on the markets. To see just how much star power Token 2049 packs, check out their list of speakers in 2019.
Token 2049 brings together the entire crypto industry by uniting entrepreneurs, investors, developers, industry enthusiasts, and global media. In 2019, Token 2049 had over 2,000 attendees and over 100 journalists. The conference also totaled over 100 speakers, with 73% of the speakers being C-level crypto executives.
Token 2049 is also known for its diverse cast of attendees and speakers, as Token 2049 represented over 70 different countries in 2019.
You can register for 2021’s Token 2049 conference here, but it is essential to register soon as tickets are limited. 50% of Token 2049’s tickets are reserved for invite-only guests, while the other 50% of tickets are set aside for the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Honorable Mention: Malta AIBC
“Malta AIBC is a fun conference located in Malta, a Mediterranean island that’s crypto-friendly. Although small, it’s one of the best crypto conferences in the industry.”
– Ian Balina, Founder and CEO of Token Metrics
After being narrowly edged out by Token 2049, Malta AIBC is more than worthy of an honorable mention on our list of Top Crypto Conferences of 2020. This conference is always at the forefront of innovation and technology, as AIBC stands for AI and Blockchain.
Typically held in-person on Malta’s picturesque island, this year’s conference has followed many others’ suit and has gone entirely virtual. There are plans to return to the in-person conference format in February 2021.
As said before, this year’s Malta AIBC occurred virtually. There is still time to register for the event as this year’s conference occurs on the 25th of November. Featuring an interactive, cutting-edge virtual expo floor, the conference will cover all the latest developments in emerging tech.
Malta AIBC is bringing together 5,000 industry peers, 100 expert speakers, and 150 big-name exhibitors. Some of the featured topics include blockchain, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, big data, and The Internet of Things.
